DPF Filter Cleanings and Replacements

With a 7-step process, we ensure you that your DPF Filter is well treated and thoroughly cleaning. We have been replacing and performing maintenance DPF Filter & Radiators for over 95 years. With our trusted expertise, you can be sure that Norman Radiator Service gets the job done right.

7-Step Cleaning Process

Step One: Record Dirt Weight

  • Before any cleaning, you need to find the weight of the dirty DPF. We do this by placing your filter on the soot scale to record the before weight on your maintenance form.

Step Two: Dirty Flow Inspection

  • We determine how clogged your filter is by placing the DPF on the Flow Meter to test the flow rate of air through the DPF.
  • Our Flow Meter can also distinguish a bad DPF that may be exothermic, cracked, or damaged, allowing contaminants to flow through the Diesel Particulate Filter using a High Powered Halogen Light to examine the filter.

Step Three: Dirt/Soot Removal

Your DPF is placed on the suction plate of our vacuum test stand to remove excess soot before regeneration. Our internal camera system and lighted cabinet allow us to easily see the loose soot removed from the filter.

Step Four: Thermal Regeneration

  • A plugged-up filter may need to be baked due to amounts of wet soot and unburned hydrocarbons to regenerate the soot to ash.
  • With our oven's "smart technology," it slowly ramps up the temperature at a rate that will not damage the filter's substrate. It monitors the DPF during the regeneration process making sure there is no uncontrolled regeneration.
  • If the temperature gets too high from the DPF regeneration, the oven will "pause" until the DPF temperature drops and has stopped its own regeneration. The range will then continue its cycle until finished.

Step Five: Final Ash Removal

Using compressed air, as to not damage the fragile substrate, the filter is hand blown to remove remaining ash as the camera system allows us to monitor the ash removal verifying the filter's cleanliness.

Step Six: Clean Flow Inspection

The filter is placed on the Flow Inspection bench to test the airflow rate through the DPF. This records the effectiveness of the cleaning by comparing the differential flow rates from before and after cleaning.

Step Seven: Record Clean Weight

The filter is placed on the Flow Inspection bench to test the airflow rate through the DPF. This records the effectiveness of the cleaning by comparing the differential flow rates from before and after cleaning.

Failure = Replacement

Some filters cannot be cleaned and must be replaced. This is most often determined during step 2 but sometimes after an initial cleaning cycle. Common reasons are: DPF core is melted or cracked, excessive soot in DPF caused by engine issues, poor engine maintenance, operator ignores DPF warning indicators, failure to regularly clean DPF at the recommended interval.
